    History of Fountain County: together with historic notes on the Wabash Valley, gleaned from early authors, old maps and manuscripts by Beckwith, H. W. (Hiram Williams), John Richards, who died in , was Sonoma County’s first civil rights activist and tireless advocate for the education of African-American children, even funding a teacher for them because the town would not allow them into public school. Richards was profiled here as part of the series on notable African-Americans in 19th century Santa Rosa.

      Sonoma's founder and leading citizen, General Vallejo, who had been elected as a state senator in the new state legislature, unsuccessfully lobbied to have Sonoma remain as the county seat of Sonoma County but it was moved to Santa Rosa in as the result of a disputed election. Sonoma was first incorporated as a city on April 4, Malia Anderson, the organizer of the initiative, chose the Museum of Sonoma County as the site for the photoshoot because the movement and the moment felt historic, and because it’s in downtown Santa Rosa, near the site of weeks of Black Lives Matter marches.
